Sumo Wrestling

Halifax Round Table hosted the inaugural Area 9 Sumo Wrestling Championships on Thursday 19th April. 20 lads from Ossett and Horbury, Halifax, Batley, Elland and Sitlington Round Tables competed for this prestigious event.

The lads were split into three merit leagues, with a round robin tornament in each league to find the top two fighters. The semi finals then consisted of two groups of 3 teams, with each contender wrestling the other two members of the team to find the two finalists.

Ossett Tablers Karl Ashford and Andrew Steel attempted to bring home the coveted trophy, but unfortunately fell short and did not get through the group stages.

In the final, Kev Leahy (Sitlington RT) demonstrated massive strength and commitment during a tough fight with Andrew Cunnington to become the eventual victor!

Area Ten Bowling

Ossett and Horbury Round Table hosted the Area Ten Pin bowling in Leeds last week - attended also by Elland, Huddersfield Pendragon, Selby and Leyland Round Tables.

Pendragon were in the lead after a strong first round, with Ossett Tabler Alan posting a strong 150+ score. So all it needed was a good second round from another member of Ossett. Step forward James - who has never scored over 100 before but ends up posting a 160+ score. Unbelievable and resulted in Ossett regaining the Area Trophy after 2 years.

Christmas Sleigh

Ossett and Horbury RT complete is annual charity christmas sleigh collection in Horbury on Wednesday 16 December, after starting 6 nights earlier in Ossett. We're currently counting up the money collected and will post details in the new year.

Go Karting Championship

The annual Ossett and Horbury go karting championship took place on Wednesday evening at Thornes Park, Wakefield. 10 competitors, one 40 minute race, and pre-race favourite Alan was in confident mood, especially after qualifying in first place. Alan won (as usual), with the rest of the drivers unable to overtake John 'Petrov' in second place who was slow but impossible to pass. Ex chairman Karl was looking likely for his highest ever position in third place until Andrew attempted an impossible overtake and took him out, allowing Steve to take third place.

A great evening and we all hope Alan puts on some weight over the next year to slow him down a bit.

Area Quiz round 1

Last night, we played Selby Round Table in the first round of the quiz last night. Venue was the bandstand in Selby Park which was absolutely freezing, followed by a beer and curry. We were eventual winners after being very close in the first few rounds. Thanks to the Selby lads for organising a great night, and to Sid from Elland for being quiz master.

Cosmic Golf

Round Tables from across West Yorkshire joined Ossett and Horbury Round Table at the Cosmic Golf centre at Xscape in September to compete in the Shellmex Trophy - an annual sporting event in Area 9. The winners would be the Table with the lowest average score per team.

The event was won by Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table, with Halifax a close second, and Ossett and Hobury in third place.

National Champions

Last weekend saw Round Tables from across the country descend on Lancaster for National Sporting Weekend 2011 'The Lancaster Bomber'.

Saturday saw many Tablers competing in 13 sports, with Andrew Steel and Karl Ashford competing in the Boules competition. 5 games, with 5 wins meant that Karl and Andrew were crowned Boules National Champions.

In 2011, National Sporting Weekend comes to Leeds, and both will need to compete to retain their crown.

Clay Pigeon Shoot

O&H Round Table held their annual clay pigeon shoot in the last week of July, at Walton near Wakefield. As usual, Barry and his mate Roderick turned up with the guns and the clay pigeon launcher, and after 15 round practices per person, the competition began to win 'The Rock' trophy.

Ten shots a piece, with the winner being the one hitting the most clays. Andrew, as defending champion went first and shot a frankly disappointing 9 hits, with the rest of the Round Table being very confident that we'd get at least 10. Not. None of us could get near to his score, so Andrew's garage is the proud owner of the Rock Trophy.

2nd at Hike and Bike

Area 9 Hike and Bike returned to Castleton YHA at the end of April, with 26 teams from within and outside Area 9 competing to win one of the three competitions. The competition began on Saturday morning with the hike, which Ray Dance assured the organisers that was 'no more than 18 miles', which ended up being about 21 miles even after the organisers took 2 miles out of the start. As in previous years, teams had to get to checkpoints within a specified time period and would lose points if they took longer than the time period. A total of 400 points could be won from the Hike, and a further 200 points could be gained from the games that took place at the bases - the much loved and vomited bushtucker trial (taking spoons out of wallpaper paste, saw dust and maggots), dingbats, jenga and a water challenge.

The Hike was a tough one this year - mainly due to the mileage - and the last weary walker got back to the YHA for 7pm, but a free beer at the end made up for it.

Sunday morning came, and the bike took place around Ladybower and Derwent Water. As in previous years, there were 4 checkpoints to achieve, each with a number of points to be achieved, with the furthest away winning the most. Along the way, there were a number of questions that they could answer to win more points, with the maximum total being 400 points.

Most teams got back within the 2.5 hours timelimit ready for the prize giving. The maximum score that could be achieved was 1000 points across the weekend.

The main competition was unfortunately not won by an Area 9 Round Table (its only ever been won by Ossett and Horbury!), but Frodsham were worthy winners, scoring 869 points.

The plate competition, which is the Europa league of Hike and Bike, was won by Hull Wyke on 708 points. The plate competition is designed for those teams who started Sunday being more than 60 points away from the highest scoring team on the hike, as its not realistic for them to win the main competition.

The Area 9 trophy was left to be presented.. Ossett and Horbury were gunning to win it for the third year in a row, but in the end, Paul Manning's Halifax team won with 821, compared to Ossett's 740 points, and Batley a creditable third on 708 points.

Marcus Phillips was voted in as Ossett and Horbury Round Table Chairman for 2010/2011 at our AGM on 14 April 2010. Marcus' key aim this year is to raise the profile of the Round Table. We all wish him the best of luck.

Round Table Riots!

40 Round Tablers from across the UK descended on the West Yorkshire Police Riot Training centre on Thursday 11th of March to go on a riot!!!

In order to help train the police officers, the shy and retiring members of the Round Table spent the day being generally boisterous, throwing rubbing bullets and wooden blocks at the police and their riot shields, with Chris Bowen from Elland launching petrol bombs at the officers.

At the end of the day, £1000 was raised for The Anthony Nolan Trust, and we all ached for days. Karl

Happy 50th Birthday

Ossett and Horbury Ladies Circle celebrated 50 years on Saturday 6th March. As is the tradition, Ossett and Horbury Round Table members 'interrupted' the Chairman's speech, doing a sketch based around the theme of Blind Date. Great fun, and our congratulations go out to the Ladies Circlers for reaching their 50th birthday.

Area Ten Pin Bowling

32 people from 8 tables turned up in Leeds to play in the area 9 Round Table 10 pin bowling competition. The competition saw Selby’s Neil Porter deliver 7 consecutive strikes and send Selby to a storming win with a whopping 374 points. Huddersfield Pendragon and Elland battled it out for second and third place, with Huddersfield finally claiming second by one point.

Ossett came a creditable 5th place, with 270 points.

Quiz winners

Ossett and Horbury played Penistone Round Table in the Area 9 Quiz Semi Final recently. A night of high drama saw the lead yo-yoing between both Round Tables through each of the 8 rounds.

The quiz went down to the last question, with one of our Tablers needing to answer the last question and win 3 points for Ossett to win. Fortunately, our President Mark answered correctly, and we are now in the final against Elland.

Happy new year

Well, a happy new year, albeit belatedly from Ossett and Horbury Round Table.

Christmas was a busy period for the Round Table, spending 6 nights raising money for local good causes, whilst having a fantastic 'mystery' night out in Leeds.

January has come and almost gone and we spent a nice evening with former members of our Round Table on the 13th, enjoying a good meal and banter at Brook House, Wakefield.

Tomorrow night, we are playing Penistone Round Table in the Area 9 Quiz semi final, who beat us at the same stage last night. Will we win - who knows but it will be fun.

We had fantastic support from the people of Horbury and Ossett during our recent Christmas sleigh collection.

In accordance with Regulation 16(2) of Wakefield Council's Street Collection Regulations, we confirm the following:

1. Permit holder is Karl Ashford, Chairman of Ossett and Horbury Round Table.
2. The permit relates to the towns of Ossett and Horbury.
3. Ossett and Horbury Round Table Charitable Trust (charity number 1051921) will benefit from the collection.
4. The collections took place on 7/8/9 December 2009 (Ossett) and 14/15/16 December 2009 (Horbury).
5. The amount collected was £829.10 (Ossett) and £8627.07 (Horbury), totaling £1691.17.
6. The expenses related to the collection were £116.12. No payments were made.

Santa and his helpers will be bringing their Sleigh to Ossett and Horbury over the next couple of weeks. Santa will be out for 6 nights from 6pm to 8pm, on the following nights:

Wednesday 9th December - Ossett - Fairfields, South Parade and surrounding streets

Karting Endurance!!

On Wednesday 25th November we headed to Raceway in Pontefract, the usual venue for the ‘Area 9 Karting Grand Prix’. Realising we could do with a little practice we ventured over for an evening of fun.

If you’ve tried karting before you’ll know it’s great fun but rather hard work. A typical race lasts 5 to 20 laps. So, after a long day at work and a little discussion we went for the 100 lap endurance race! Genius!

The race was well mannered lunacy and split times tumbled as the laps progressed. All drivers managed 23.somethings which is pretty decent for the track. However, we did lose one driver after just 17 laps due to travel sickness!? On lap 34 another followed leaving the hard core to battle it out.

We’d also like to thank Simon from Selby table for joining us for the evening. He won in convincing fashion putting in some of the fasted laps the track had seen all day. He won’t be invited again!

After the event everyone headed to Xscape for a celebratory drink. Each taking several minutes to re-adjust to the controls of a road car and thinking that maybe the 2 x 25 lap race would have been a better idea.

As I write this I am contemplating the evening I have ahead of me...The 2009 Sitlington Beer Drinking Competition. I’ve heard stories and legend of the event but this will be my first entry. Yards of ale, boat races, numerous other competitions and food too! A post will follow on the event once I recover!

Ossett and Horbury Round Table

Ossett and Horbury Round Table Number 212 was formed in 1949 and currently has 15 members. We hold two meetings every month.

The first meeting is called our 'Business' meeting, and is really an opportunity to organise the events we want to undertake and have some banter. The second meeting of every month is our 'Social' evening, and our past socials have included playing laserquest and paintball, historic walks around the local hostelries in Leeds, Ten Pin Bowling and Black Tie Dinners.

We also organise numerous weekends away including a Dads and Kids camping weekend, Hike and Bike challenge weekend, and Twelves Weekend where we join up with other Tables with the number '12' in their title.

We have something for everybody, and the more you put into Table, the more you get out of it.

Origins

The first Round Table was formed in Norwich in 1927. The founder, Louis Marchesi, was a young Rotarian who felt a need existed for a club where the young business men of the town could gather on a regular basis to exchange ideas, learn from the experiences of their colleagues and play a collective part in the civic life of Norwich . Within a year membership of this Round Table had grown to 85 and interest had been shown in establishing Round Tables elsewhere.

Round Table owes nothing to Arthurian Legend, deriving both its title and its maxim from a speech made to the British Industries Fair in 1927 by the then Prince of Wales - "The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table, ADOPT methods that have proved so sound in the past, ADAPT them to the changing needs of the times and wherever possible, IMPROVE them". The design of the Round Table emblem is, however, an adaptation of the table which hangs in the great hall, Winchester and which is claimed to be the Round Table of the court of King Arthur.

Round Table has used the motto of Adopt, Adapt and improve to make it an organisation which is still relevant in the 21st century.

Round Table is national organisation for men aged 18 to 45 years who want to enjoy an active social life whilst occassionally giving something back to the community.

Ossett and Horbury Round Table is a club based near Wakefield, West Yorkshire and welcomes new members from all surrounding areas. We have an active social calendar and meet twice per month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays.

Well what to say?

This is Ossett & Horbury 212's first venture into blogging. Hopefully over the coming months it will become a point of reference for anyone interested in the activities of our table and the great organisation of Roundtable.

I promise that future posts will be much more exciting than this one!

Cosmic Golf versus Sitlington Round Table

Ossett and Horbury Round Table challenged local friends Sitlington and District Round Table to a 'Cosmic Golf' tournament on 28th October. Cosmic Golf is like crazy golf, although in 3D and indoors.

6 members from O&H, and 4 members from Sitlington played 18 holes, and the winning Table would be the one with the lowest average score.

After 18 holes, Sitlington had an average score of 67 shots, with Ossett and Horbury being victorious with 62 shots. An excellent evening all round, and we're looking forward to next year's competition.
